Date: 11th November 2024
This was my first visit to the reserve since 7th October 2024 for various reasons and, although it was a lovely sunny morning with some beautiful autumn colours, it was very quiet in terms of wildlife
However, there were a few highlights from my visit.
I saw and heard few birds with only 11 species recorded but at least the autumn “acorn munchers” were conspicuous: I saw 4 Jays and 6 Grey Squirrels at various locations on the reserve.

In addition, as I was returning to the Spanish Steps to leave the reserve, I heard, but unfortunately failed to see, a calling Goldcrest.
There were still at least 3 Moorhens on Willow Pond including 2 adults and a juvenile from this year.
Immediately after leaving the reserve, I had the remarkable sighting of a Red Admiral basking and trying to gather some warmth from the sun and, between the A127 footbridge and Asda, I saw 1 and possibly 2 Goldcrests associating with a roving flock of Long-tailed Tits.
Species recorded during this visit were as follows (heard only records in italics):
Goldcrest
Grey Squirrel
Site totals for 2024 to date (2023 totals in brackets):
Birds = 36 (36)
Total species list for the site:
Birds = 49
