Visit to Noak Bridge Nature Reserve – 26th January 2025

Date: 26th January 2025

Time: from 8:30 a.m.

Weather: dry, sunny/cloudy, light wind, 3°C to 5°C

After my first visit of 2025 to the reserve on 7th January 2025 when I saw and heard very little apart from my first Reeves’ Muntjac for the site, this morning’s visit was much more productive although I still failed to get any photos.

I recorded 14 species of birds including 7 additions to my 2025 site list …. Grey Wagtail, Long-tailed Tit, Song Thrush, Wren, Jay, Mallard, Herring Gull

I first recorded Grey Wagtail at the reserve in 2023 but I had not seen this species since. This morning I was first alerted to the call of a Grey Wagtail and then located a single bird flying very high over Meadow Pond in a southerly direction.

I also saw 3 Mallards fly over Meadow Pond and they did so 3 times before also heading off south, presumably to Gloucester Park lake.

There was a notable increase in activity, calling and singing from Blue Tits, Great Tits and Robins.

With regard to mammals, I had a very brief view of a Red Fox between the Spanish Steps and the storage shed as it emerged from the bushes adjacent to the path but it quickly disappeared. Unlike my other local patch site centred on St. Nicholas Church where I see Red Foxes on almost every visit, I have very rarely seen them at the reserve. They are doubtless present but difficult to see due to the number of people and dogs that are present.

Species recorded during this visit were as follows (heard only records in italics):

Blue Tit

Great Tit
Long-tailed Tit
Robin
Wren
Song Thrush
Blackbird
Grey Wagtail
Woodpigeon
Jay
Magpie
Carrion Crow
Mallard
Herring Gull

Red Fox
