Trophy hunting imports to end (possibly)

This UK Government is engulfed in serial incompetence, serial lies and serial corruption.

There is almost nothing that it has done or proposes to do that anyone can or should support.

However, this morning comes welcome confirmation that the UK Government will (at last) ban big game hunters from bringing their trophies home with new legislation covering near-threatened, threatened and endangered species of wildlife.

Having said that, it has taken the UK Government over 2 years since legislation was originally announced in the Queen’s speech for anything of substance to emerge and substantially longer since campaigning against the appalling and barbaric practice of trophy hunting started.

Plans for legislation banning hunting trophies were prompted by the shooting of Cecil the Lion in 2015 by an American dentist, Walter Palmer, at a reserve in Zimbabwe. In 2019, the UK Government consulted on plans for a ban which received overwhelming public support.

Unfortunately, even now, the UK Government does not appear to have a specific timetable for implementation with no publication date for the Bill and its consideration in Parliament. This is not expected until the spring of 2022.

So come on .... some progress has at last been made but immediate implementation of the proposed legislation is essential to finally translate words of good intention in to real action and positive outcomes for wildlife.

Ban Trophy Hunting

The late Sir David Amess (see here) was a strong supporter of a ban on trophy hunting amongst his other animal welfare campaigns.
