When will the killing stop?

The annual RSPB Birdcrime 2022 report details the illegal shooting, trapping and poisoning of protected birds of prey in the UK with information collated by RSPB’s Investigations Team working with the police and statutory agencies.

The findings are likely to be the tip of a very large iceberg given that the ongoing bird flu crisis meant that many dead birds of prey recovered were not able to be analysed for cause of death.

The report details 61 confirmed cases of raptor persecution in 2022 (shooting, trapping and poisoning) and documents a clear connection with gamebird shooting. At least 64% occurred on land managed for game shooting, mirroring the statistics from the previous 2 years. Despite this, in 2022 there were only 2 convictions for raptor persecution, both involving gamekeepers.

To quote the report: “When will the killing stop?

When is the UK Government finally going to take action to tackle this widespread criminal activity and stop pandering to its friends and supporters in the shooting and hunting community?
