Date: 15th June 2025
Time: from 6:30 a.m.
Weather: dry, sunny, light wind, 14°C to 19°C
This morning, I had my
first visit to the site since 28th May 2025 due to trips away from home and other reasons.
It proved to be another successful visit and I recorded 6 new species for the site for 2025: Swift (2 flying high over St. Nicholas Church), Large, Small and Essex Skippers (c.10 “golden” skippers with all 3 species present from photo ID), Large White (1), Meadow Brown (c.15)
It was good to finally record Swift but sadly these birds were probably just passing through since the numbers that I used to see around the church from late spring through to mid-summer are now just a memory.
The other highlights during my visit were as follows:
Numerous juvenile birds along and adjacent to the access track from Larkins Tyres: Blue Tit, Great Tit, Robin, Blackbird
Chiffchaff: 1 seen along the access track from Larkins Tyres plus 3 unseen singing males
Blackcap: male and female seen together in the cemetery plus another female seen in the churchyard plus 4 unseen singing males
Red Fox: a very showy and confident individual seen and photographed in the grassland area in the southern section of the site adjacent to St. Nicholas Lane
Butterflies: Small Heath (1)
Damselflies: Azure Damselfly (3)
Species recorded during this visit were as follows (heard only records in italics):
Swift
Red Fox
Large Skipper
Azure Damselfly
