Today is World Wetlands Day

Today is World Wetlands Day.

World Wetlands Day is celebrated internationally on 2nd February each year and it aims to raise global awareness about the vital role of wetlands for people and our planet.

In 2022 the theme and focus for World Wetlands Day is Action for People and Nature. It is an appeal to invest financial, human and political capital to save the world’s wetlands from disappearing and to restore those we have degraded.

Wetlands are land areas that are saturated or flooded with water either permanently or seasonally. Inland wetlands include marshes, ponds, lakes, fens, rivers, flood plains and swamps. Coastal wetlands include saltwater marshes, estuaries, mangroves, lagoons and even coral reefs. Fishponds, rice paddies and saltpans are human-made wetlands.

In the UK, we have lost 35% of our wetlands since 1970 and nearly a third of freshwater species are threatened with extinction. The Widlfowl and Wetlands Trust, of which I am a long-standing supporter and member, is the UK's largest wetland charity and campaigns for the restoration of our wetlands and for the creation of new wetlands.
