Visit to St. Nicholas Church and surrounding areas – 16th April 2025

Date: 16th April 2025

Time: from 8 p.m.

I recently bought a thermal monocular and initially experimented with this on 30th March 2025.

Last night, I had an extended visit to the site with my thermal monocular and managed to “see” 4 Red Foxes and a Reeves’ Muntjac in complete darkness. I am now hoping to rediscover the local Badgers.

Here are some images of Red Foxes ....

Whilst I was out, I also heard both a male and a female Tawny Owl and had a very brief view of a single flying bird. This was a very welcome addition to my site list for 2025 taking it to 40 species. Unfortunately, I was unable to locate the birds with the thermal monocular and capture any photos.

This was my first record of Tawny Owl for some years and follows a series of records in close proximity to my flat between 28th July and 9th September 2024 …. see here.

Site totals for 2025 to date (2024 totals in brackets):

Birds = 40 (49)

Mammals = 3 (3)
Butterflies = 2 (17)
Dragonflies and damselflies = 0 (11)
Reptiles = 0 (0)
Amphibians = 0 (0)

Total species list for the site

Birds = 69

Mammals = 7
Butterflies = 25
Dragonflies and damselflies = 14
Reptiles = 1
Amphibians = 0
