Visit to St. Nicholas Church and surrounding areas – 20th April 2025

Date: 20th April 2025

Time: from 9 a.m.

Weather: dry, cloudy/sunny, moderate wind, 7°C to 10°C

It was relatively quiet during my visit today with fewer than expected species heard and/or seen. This was possibly due to my later start, the cloudier and breezier weather and the cooler temperatures.

However, there were a few highlights during my visit:

Lesser Whitethroat: singing male again seen in the northern section of the site and paddock following my first record of the year on 13th April 2025.

Chiffchaff: 5 singing males and another 2 calling birds across the site (1 seen)

Blackcap: 1 singing male (unseen)

Sparrowhawk: 1 seen flying over Church Hill before landing in a tree and then immediately flying off

Green Woodpecker: 1 seen flying across the paddock immediately behind Larkins Tyres

Great Spotted Woodpecker: 1 heard “drumming” in the wooded area adjacent to Hilly Road

With regard to mammals, I saw a single Grey Squirrel in the western section of the cemetery
