Visit to St. Nicholas Church and surrounding areas – 19th October 2026

Date: 19th October 2026

Time: from 10 a.m.

Weather: dry, bright/cloudy, light wind, 10°C to 11°C

During my visit, I added 2 species to my site list for 2026: Skylark and Starling.

Skylark is a species that I listen and look out for during the October “vis-mig” season. I first recorded it in 2022 and again in both 2024 and 2025. This morning, I heard and then saw a single calling Skylark flying high in northerly direction over the paddock in the northern section of the site. I then saw 2 more birds flying together high over the cemetery heading in a southerly direction.

I thought that I had recorded Starling this year (I should have by October!) but a quick review of my records showed that I had not. Therefore, a small flock of c.30 birds flying over the paddock in the northern section of the site was a welcome sight.

Other notable records of birds during my visit included the following:

Chaffinch: 2 seen flying together over the paddock in the northern section of the site

Goldcrest: 1 heard calling in the woodland in the southern section of the site

Great Spotted Woodpecker: 1 heard calling in the woodland in the southern section of the site

Jackdaw: 1 heard calling in the northern section of the site

With regard to mammals, I saw a single Grey Squirrel in the woodland in the southern section of the site
