Visit to St. Nicholas Church and surrounding areas – 28th October 2026

Date: 28th October 2026

Time: from 8:15 a.m.

Weather: dry, sunny, light wind, 8°C to 11°C

The main purpose of my visit this morning was Red Fox photography, having baited a specific location with the remains of a chicken carcass, dog food and dog biscuits. Unfortunately, this was a complete failure with not a single sighting of a Red Fox at this location or indeed anywhere else. For some reason, my “breakfast buffet” was not welcomed but I bet it quickly disappears!

However, it did prove to be a very successfully visit.

During my visit, I added another species to my site list for 2026: Ring-necked Parakeet.

I first heard the distinctive call of Ring-necked Parakeets and quickly located 4 birds flying over the northern section of the site in a northerly direction. This is a species that I first recorded in 2023 and I have seen small numbers of birds at least once in subsequent years.

Other notable records of birds during my visit included the following:

Common Buzzard: 1 seen briefly taking off from a bush in the paddock in the northern section of the site

Skylark: 2 individuals heard calling whilst flying over the northern section of the site but neither seen

Chaffinch: 2 individual birds initially heard calling and then a small flock of c.10 seen, all in the northern section of the site

Green Woodpecker: 2 loudly calling birds seen in the northern section of the site

Great Spotted Woodpecker: 2 heard calling in the northern section of the site but neither seen

Jackdaw: a single bird, 2 birds and 4 birds all seen flying over the northern section of the site

With regard to mammals, I heard but did not see a "barking" Reeves' Muntjac in the northern section of the site. In addition, I saw 3 Grey Squirrels, 2 along the access track from Larkins Tyres and another in the northern section of the site
