Visit to Noak Bridge Nature Reserve – 5th February 2025

Date: 5th February 2024

Time: from 8:30 a.m.

Weather: dry, sunny/cloudy, light wind, 3°C to 6°C

I had a very good visit to the reserve this morning, particularly during my hour spent at Meadow Pond.

During my visit, I added 2 species to my 2025 site list …. Moorhen (single bird on Willow Pond) and Grey Squirrel (1 in the wooded area near the Spanish Steps and at least 4 very active individuals in the trees surrounding Meadow Pond).

After seeing my first Grey Squirrel of the year near the Spanish Steps, my visit progressed well with a singing Song Thrush in the trees opposite the storage shed. In my experience, this is a species that doesn’t seem to like being spotted as it invariably flies off as it spots me! However, this was a very showy individual which allowed me to take several photos.

Singing Song Thrushes were very evident this morning and I heard and/or saw at least 3 singing males across the reserve.

After recording my first Reeve’s Muntjac at the reserve on 7th January 2025 and a rare sighting of a Red Fox on 26th January 2025, I saw both species again this morning. Both animals appeared at the rear of Meadow Pond and progressed around the edge from left to right. Unfortunately, the dense vegetation proved to be an auto-focus nightmare and I failed to get any photos.

Whilst at Meadow Pond, 2 male Mallards flew in and remained there although, again, photographing them as they swam around proved challenging due to the dense vegetation.

Species recorded during this visit were as follows (heard only records in italics):

Blue Tit

Great Tit
Long-tailed Tit
Robin
Wren
Song Thrush
Blackbird
Woodpigeon
Jay
Magpie
Carrion Crow
Moorhen
Mallard
Herring Gull

Red Fox

Reeves’ Muntjac
Grey Squirrel
