Badger Trust fights back against badger crime with hard-hitting film

The Badger Trust, of which I am a member, has just released a new short film, “Stopping Badger Crime” which aims to raise public awareness of crimes against Badgers such as baiting, snaring, sett interference and unlicensed shooting and to encourage recording and reporting …. see here.

The film is presented by Mike Dilger who is well known from his appearances on BBC1 -The One Show and as a regular speaker at the annual Birdfair. He is also patron of the Essex Badger Protection Group and some of their work appears in the film.

The Badger is not an endangered species but it is amongst the most legally protected wild animals in the UK being shielded under the Protection of Badgers Act 1992, the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981 and the Bern Convention on the Conservation of European Wildlife and Natural Habitats.

The Protection of Badgers Act 1992 consolidates and improves previous legislation. It is a serious offence to kill, injure or take a Badger or to damage or interfere with a sett unless a licence is obtained from a statutory authority. In spite of this, it can be hard to enforce the law so offending behaviour continues to occur.

The legislation is not just confined to those involved in deliberate cruelty and killing of Badgers. It also applies to property developers, farmers, gamekeepers, home owners, pest-control companies, etc. Basically, if anyone damages or interferes with a Badger sett, they can be prosecuted.

Here is the Badger Trust film ....
