RSPB Bempton Cliffs – Puffins, Razorbills, Guillemots, Kittiwakes and Fulmars

On 27th June 2022, I visited RSPB Bempton Cliffs in Yorkshire …. see here.

The main reason for my visit was to see the Black-browed Albatross that was again being reported on almost daily basis since 30th March 2022 …. see here.

However, RSPB Bempton Cliffs is also home to an amazing seabird colony, including breeding Puffins, Razorbills, Guillemots, Kittiwakes and Fulmars.

As at most of the UK's seabird colonies, PuffinsRazorbills and Guillemots can be found in varying numbers at RSPB Bempton CliffsDuring my visit, I saw c.50 Puffins but they took a lot of searching for amongst the much more abundant Razorbills and huge numbers of Guillemots.

One of the most recognisable sounds at a seabird colony is the onomatopoeic call of the Kittiwake, a true marine and pelagic gull which returns to mainland and island cliffs to breed each year. There are very large numbers of these birds to be seen and heard at RSPB Bempton Cliffs.

Fulmars are one of my favourite seabirds. They are like mini-albatrosses in the way that they behave but nothing like the "Big One"! On this visit to RSPB Bempton Cliffs, I only saw c.20 Fulmars but fortunately they are relatively easy to photograph as they glide past or hang in the updrafts off the cliff edge.

Here are my photos of all these species ….
