Visit to Noak Bridge Nature Reserve – 2nd January 2023

Date: 2nd January 2023

Time: from 10 a.m.

Weather: dry, sunny, light wind, 8°C to 10°C

This was my first visit to the site of the year which proved to be relatively quiet, particularly compared with my visit to my other local patch site around St. Nicholas Church on 1st January 2023.

I only recorded 12 bird species and nothing especially notable.

However, Grey Squirrels were particularly conspicuous with 6 seen (1 along the track from the pedestrian gate to the Spanish Steps, 1 between the storage shed and Puckles Pond, 1 at Puckles Pond, 1 between Puckles Pond and the eastern boardwalk and 2 at Fox Pond).

It was nice to see all the ponds, other than Fox Pond, full of water following them almost completely drying up during the very hot and rainless days of summer.

Species recorded during this visit were as follows (heard only records in italics):

Blue Tit
Great Tit
Long-tailed Tit
Wren
Robin
Blackbird
Goldfinch
Jay
Magpie
Carrion Crow
Woodpigeon
Herring Gull

Grey Squirrel

Site totals for 2023 to date (2022 totals in brackets):

Birds = 12  (30)
Mammals = 1 (2)
Butterflies = 0  (15)
Dragonflies and damselflies = 0  (5)
Reptiles = 0  (2)

Total species list for the site:

Birds = 44
