Visit to Gloucester Park – 5th January 2023

Date: 5th January 2023

Time: from 9:30 a.m.

Weather: dry, cloudy, light wind, 11°C to 12°C

Gloucester Park is a site that I visited regularly during the first Covid-19 lockdown in early 2020 although I only occasionally visit now due to the number of people around and anti-social behaviour including littering, fly-tipping and vandalism.

However, I did visit this morning, primarily to add species to my 2023 UK year list: my other local patch sites around St. Nicholas Church and at Noak Bridge Nature Reserve do not provide the opportunities that the lakes at Gloucester Park do.

My last visit was on 16th March 2022 and at that time I noted “it was a frustrating visit due to metal fencing/railings preventing any close access to the main lake at the western end and along almost the entire length of the southern edge. It appears that contractors are currently working behind the fencing/railings to lay a solid surface path.

Surprisingly, after so much time, it appeared that little progress has been made so the exactly the same issue was present.

Nonetheless, I did manage to record 22 species of birds plus 2 mammal species (Brown Rat and Grey Squirrel).

With regard to birds, all of the water birds were additions to my 2023 UK year list. The other highlights were a single fly-over Sparrowhawk and c.5 Redwings, a single Green Woodpecker and a single calling but unseen Great Spotted Woodpecker.

Species recorded during this visit were as follows (heard only records in italics):

Blue Tit
Great Tit
Robin
Redwing
Blackbird
Song Thrush
Sparrowhawk
Green Woodpecker
Great Spotted Woodpecker
Jay
Magpie
Carrion Crow
Woodpigeon
Collared Dove
Black-headed Gull
Grey Heron
Cormorant
Mute Swan
Canada Goose
Mallard
Coot
Moorhen

Brown Rat
Grey Squirrel
