Visit to St. Nicholas Church and surrounding areas – 7th April 2023

Date: 7th April 2023

Time: from 7:15 a.m.

Weather: dry, sunny, light wind, 6°C to 8°C

I accessed the site as usual via the track from Larkins Tyres. From the wooded clearing at the end of the track, I took the short walk through the trees to the fence, my regular watchpoint overlooking the field, scrub, hedges and trees in the north of the site. I spent some time here and walking around the northern section of the site.

This was the fourth consecutive visit where I have recorded Common Buzzard in the northern section of the site, this time a single bird perched in a tree at a potential nest site.

Again in this same area, I saw 3 male Greenfinches although there may have been some double-counting since these birds were very mobile flying around the area and often engaging in their display flight. I managed to get my first photo ever of this species at the site.

Chiffchaffs were again very evident across the site and I saw 2 singing males and heard at least 6 other singing males.

I also heard 2 singing but unseen male Blackcaps, the first in the western section of the cemetery and the second in the area of scrub behind Larkins Tyres.

On my way home, I returned to the watchpoint and saw a Common Buzzard fly in to the northern section of the site plus a fly-over Grey Heron heading in an easterly direction.

From my watchpoint, I also saw 2 Red Foxes emerge from the hedge, a presumed dog and vixen.

I saw a third Red Fox in the area behind Larkins Tyres and unfortunately this animal did not look particularly healthy.

I saw 4 Grey Squirrels during my visit, 2 in the wooded area adjacent to the track from Larkins Tyres, 1 in the south west corner of the site and 1 in the wooded area very close to my flat.
