Today is International Vulture Awareness Day

Today is International Vulture Awareness Day.

The first Saturday in September each year is International Vulture Awareness Day.

International Vulture Awareness Day has grown from Vulture Awareness Days that were started by the Hawk Conservancy Trust and the Birds of Prey Programme of the Endangered Wildlife Trust who worked together to expand the initiative into an international event with hundreds of participants across the globe.

Vultures are ecologically vital and they are now the most threatened group of birds in the world with populations of many species under pressure and some facing extinction.

Vultures are much maligned but they are beautiful in their own way and deserving of protection.

There are 4 species of vulture in Europe: Black Vulture (or Cinerous Vulture), Griffon Vulture, Egyptian Vulture and Bearded Vulture (or Lammergeier)
. I have been fortunate to see and photograph all 4 species on my trips to southern and eastern Europe.

There are no resident species of vulture in the UK although a first summer female Bearded Vulture has been present in Derbyshire since late June 2020 .... see here and here.

I am not expecting to see any vulture species flying over either of my local patch sites any time soon πŸ˜€ .... but if a Bearded Vulture can turn up in Derbyshire ....
