Emily Williamson: winning statue design of RSPB founder revealed

I have previously written about Emily Williamson .... see here.

Emily Williamson was a remarkable woman. Her campaigning against the killing of birds to use their feathers and other body parts to adorn hats in the late 1880s eventually led to the birth of the the Society for the Protection of Birds, later known as the RSPB, and, on 1st July 1921, the Importation of Plumage (Prohibition) Act was passed which banned the import of exotic feathers and saving many species from extinction.

To mark the centenary of the 1921 legislation a statue of Emily Williamson has been commissioned to stand in Didsbury's Fletcher Moss Park near her former home .... see here.

About 12,000 people (me included) voted for 4 shortlisted designs and the winner (which I voted for) was recently announced at the Manchester Art Gallery. The winning artwork, which depicts Emily Williamson watching a bird take flight plus her holding a copy of the 1921 legislation, will be unveiled at her former Manchester home in 2023.
