The
Scottish Green Party seem to be the only political party campaigning vigorously
for a complete end to driven grouse shooting …. see here.
In
First Minister’s Questions in the Scottish Parliament yesterday, Alison
Johnstone MSP from the Scottish Green Party brought up the ongoing issue of
illegal raptor persecution on grouse moors in Scotland and this led to a weak response
from the First Minister, Nicola Sturgeon MSP …. see here.
Today, the Environment Cabinet Secretary, Roseanna
Cunningham MSP, issued a statement …. see here.
Raptor Persecution UK
said: “This latest holding statement, because
that’s what it is, is utter bollocks .... This is, pure and simple, persistent inaction in the face of persistent evidence .... The only thing that’s changed in the last 20 years is that the body count has increased.” …. see here for the full response.
Meanwhile, the UK Labour Party has called for
grouse shooting to be licensed …. see here.
The main
opposition party in England is hardening its stance all the time against grouse
shooting and this is largely for the same reasons as everybody else except the
owners of grouse moors and their managers and gamekeepers, the hunting and
shooting lobby and the Conservative Party. Whilst this is a very welcome development from the Labour Party, they need to go further and campaign for an end to driven grouse shooting.
I suppose we should be grateful for the SNP and the Labour Party for at
least seeing a case for reform.
However, the SNP is the party of Government in Scotland and is persistently failing to take action whilst the Labour Party is in opposition in both the UK and Scottish Parliaments and with no prospect of being in power for years.

What have we heard from the Conservative Party led UK Government?
Absolutely nothing!
No surprise there!
It is the Scottish Green Party and the Green Party of England and Wales that are leading by example and articulating the clear case for a ban on driven grouse
shooting. Well done to them!
