The third Friday/Saturday/Sunday
weekend in August normally sees me make the annual visit to the Birdfair at Rutland Water
followed by a trip to RSPB Frampton Marsh
in Lincolnshire.
Birdfair is an annual event
run by staff and volunteers from the Leicestershire and Rutland WildlifeTrust. Widely regarded as the biggest event in
the international birding calendar, Birdfair has been described as
"the birder's Glastonbury". It is an iconic event, which was
the first of its kind and remains the largest internationally, and it has
supported international nature conservation projects through BirdLife International
from the creation
of new national parks to saving species from the threat of extinction. More
than £5 million has been raised and donated to such causes over its 31 year
history.
However, the organisers have done an amazing job in arranging a Virtual Birdfair
from 18th to 23rd August 2020 with a whole series of online events, lectures,
etc. and with donations to BirdLife International and their “Stop Illegal Bird Trade” project.
