Raptor killing comes to Essex!

After the extensive publicity in recent weeks regarding the killing of raptors on the driven grouse moors of north east Scotland, albeit it has been going on unabated for years both here and in northern England, reports have now emerged of the death of a Hobby in south Essex after it was shot and unable to survive its injuries .... see here and here.

Yet another outrageous and totally senseless killing, this time on the Essex Wildlife Trust reserve at Blue House Farm in North Fambridge, a site that I visit regularly.

Whilst it is totally abhorrent and illegal, the rationale behind the killing of raptors and other wildlife on the driven grouse moors of north east Scotland and northern England is understood .... allegedly to protect a single quarry species (Red Grouse) from predation and disease and thereby increase its numbers so a few rich people can shoot it for fun and entertainment.

However, what possible reason is there for killing a Hobby which preys on large insects and hirundines? It just demonstrates the complete bloodlust of a minority of brain-dead human beings (the term human is applied very loosely).
