NOT MY KING!

We need an election, not a coronation.

We need a choice, not Charles.

Charles was proclaimed king months ago. He does not need a coronation. However, he has insisted on this ridiculous circus and vanity parade at a cost to the taxpayer of an estimated £250m!

That is before the additional cost of lost productivity in the already struggling UK economy arising from yet another public holiday to supposedly celebrate or commemorate a royal event!

What could we possibly do with all that money saved on not having a coronation?

Actually, what could we possibly do with all that money saved on not having to pay the extended royal family to live a life of luxury and privilege?

Just a suggestion but how about much needed investment in so many other parts of our society that would benefit normal people during these difficult and challenging times for so many?

This coronation is a totally unnecessary celebration of totally undeserved hereditary wealth and privilege, all during a cost-of-living crisis affecting millions of people across the UK.

No wonder only a minority of people care about the coronation.

Furthermore, more than 1 in 4 (27%) British people now support abolishing the monarchy including 40% of those under 25. Support for retaining the monarchy stands at just 60%, well below the 70% to 75% previously reported from across the polling industry over the last 10 years.

Survey Report (yougov.com)

The king is hugely rich with an estimated wealth of £1.8 billion so why can’t he pay for this royal circus and vanity parade himself rather than expecting taxpayers to pick up the bill?

Why do we need a coronation anyway?

There are considered to be 197 countries in the world today and only 26, or just over 13%, have monarchies. Even less are considered to be democracies.

Coronations in Europe were previously held in the monarchies of Europe. Current European monarchies have either replaced coronations with simpler ceremonies to mark an accession (e.g. Norway and Denmark) or have never practiced coronations (e.g. the Netherlands and Belgium). Most monarchies today only require a simple oath to be taken in the presence of the country's legislature. Much simpler and much cheaper! There is one exception. The UK is the only monarchy in Europe that still practices coronation. We don't need a coronation, we don't want a coronation.

Then there is this ridiculous and insulting idea of the UK population swearing an oath of allegiance to the new king during the coronation. Various polls show that 65% to 85% of people do not support this.

The king should be giving an oath of allegiance to us, the subjects citizens of this country who pay for him and his extended family.

There is zero chance of me swearing an oath of allegiance to a man who has not been elected by the people of this country and for whom I have no respect at all. There is more chance of me taking a trip to the Moon looking for birds and actually finding some!

I will swear an oath of allegiance to all those, who are increasing in number, who continue to campaign for the abolition of the monarchy and the establishment of a modern democratic republic with an elected head of state.

Speaking of democracy, freedom of expression and the right to protest are fundamental rights. However, the reactionary right-wing Conservative UK Government has recently passed and rushed through legislation deliberately restricting those rights.

No wonder the UK has been downgraded in an annual global index of civic freedoms as a result of the UK Government’s “increasingly authoritarian” drive to impose restrictive and punitive laws on public protests.

The Civicus Monitor, which tracks the democratic and civic health of 197 countries across the world, said the UK Government was creating a “hostile environment” towards campaigners, charities and other civil society bodies.

The UK’s willingness to clamp down on civic freedoms such as the right to peaceful assembly means it is now classified as “obstructed”, putting it alongside countries such as Poland, South Africa and Hungary.

This comes as no surprise at all to anyone who has deep concerns about the climate emergency and the biodiversity crisis and has seen the UK Government's increasingly authoritarian actions towards democratic campaigning and protest.

The Guardian - "Hostile, authoritarian" UK downgraded in civic freedoms index

This new legislation is now being used to target the substantial number of people who support the abolition of the monarchy and who specifically want to legitimately protest at the coronation. This is appalling and should be of serious concern to anyone who is a democrat.
