30 by 30

30 by 30 is being championed by Rewilding Britain and several other nature, wildlife and conservation organisations.

The UK is one of the most nature-depleted countries in the world despite being one of the countries with the most interest in nature and wildlife. According to the global Biodiversity Intactness Index, the UK index of 81% is well below the global average of 85% and the UK is ranked 189th out of 218 countries assessed. This is a legacy of centuries of industrialisation, urbanisation, over-exploitation of our natural resources and the normalisation of the destruction of our habitats and wildlife. The implications and impacts are clear .... see here and here.

30 by 30 is essentially an expansion of nature’s recovery across the UK, restoring and connecting up areas of rich natural habitat across at least 30% of the UK’s land and seas by 2030. The vision is that at least 5% of the UK be rewilded with 25% returned to broader mosaics of nature-enhancing land and marine uses.

Rewilding will not only reverse biodiversity loss and enable nature to bounce back but it will also help to mitigate many of the impacts of climate change by drawing down millions of tonnes of carbon from the atmosphere. Furthermore, it presents opportunities for communities to diversify and create more resilient, nature-based economies and reconnect us with the wonders of wild nature, thereby improving physical and mental health.

Support the 30 by 30 campaign .... think big, act wild.
