Date: 3rd March 2022
Time: from
8 a.m.
Weather: dry,
sunny/hazy sunshine, light wind, 5°C to 8°C
The
main purpose of my visit this morning was to photograph Red Foxes which
I have posted about separately here.
In
addition, to the main location for photography, I briefly saw another Red
Fox cross the road at the bottom of Church Hill whilst sat up at St.
Nicholas Church. This is the first time that I have seen Red Foxes at this location for some time.
With
regard to birds, I added a further 2 species to my 2022 list for the site bringing the
total to date to 29: a single male Mallard flying in a westerly
direction over the north of the site and a single Lesser Black-backed Gull
seen flying in an easterly direction again over the north of the site.
Other notable, albeit “heard only” records included a singing male Greenfinch in the top of the trees along the access track from Larkins Tyres, a singing Goldcrest in the trees at the top of Church Hill, 2 briefly calling Great Spotted Woodpeckers in the north of the site and a very distant calling Green Woodpecker again in the north of the site.
Generally, bird song
continues to increase in frequency and intensity but I have yet to hear the
first Chiffchaffs or Blackcaps of the spring. It can’t be too
long now before a warm and sunny morning provides the welcome sound of these 2
summer visitors.
In addition to
the Red Fox, I saw 3 Grey Squirrels: 1 along the access
track from Larkins Tyres, 1 in the wooded area at the end of the access track
from Larkins Tyres and 1 crossing the grassy strip leading down from the top of
Church Hill to St. Nicholas Lane.
Species
recorded during this visit were as follows (heard only records in italics):
Slava Ukraini! …. Glory to Ukraine!
