Last night the BBC hosted a debate between the 2 Prime Minister wannabees, Rishi Sunak and Liz Truss.
Is this seriously all that is on offer after the serial incompetence and the complete lack of honesty and integrity from the clown and buffoon that is still squatting in Downing Street?
Putting aside a lot of the other nonsense from both
candidates in their bid to appear the most reactionary and right-wing to the
tiny Conservative Party selectorate who get to vote, there were 2 highlights
lowlights for me.
Firstly, we had just a few minutes on the immense challenge facing our country and the world, namely the climate emergency. What did we get from the candidates? Some waffle about “innovation” and recycling.
FFS! The planet is literally on fire and we need Governments, businesses and corporations and all of us as individuals to heed the warnings and the evidence in front of eyes and take the substantial step-change actions required to ensure the survival of humanity and all the wonderful biodiversity that we share our planet with.
A General Election would be a good start. Hopefully, we might just get a new Government that doesn’t repeatedly indulge in meaningless “greenwash” and actually implements a robust Climate Change Strategy and delivers the promised emissions cuts as legally required to meet the obligations under the Climate Change Act 2008
We then moved very quickly on from the climate emergency to a discussion about Truss’s earrings and Sunak’s suits. Fashion sense is obviously far more important than the survival of the planet!
Well said Chris ....
My throat is sore . I’ve never , ever shouted so much at a TV in all my life . The poodles left the kitchen . And sanity , integrity and hope left with them . Hopeless . Literally . The world is actually dying and they’re still in the playground @DeborahMeaden @GaryLineker

Secondly, the audience said that they wanted “honesty and integrity“ from the new Prime Minister. Both candidates were asked …. “Is Brexit to blame for the queues in Dover and Folkestone?”
Truss: “No”
Sunak: “No”
Audience: [Applause]
Oh, that’s just fine then. No follow-up, no
discussion, no challenge. Utterly useless
First, during the 2016 referendum, there were the repeated warnings of huge delays and backlogs at the border if the UK left the EU.
Second, there were the perfunctory dismissals of “Project Fear” by the Brexiteers and the right-wing media of those warnings.
Third, after the referendum resulted in a vote to leave the EU, the Government failed to plan for delays and backlogs at the border and rejected the need for additional staff and infrastructure to mitigate and manage it.
Fourth, the consequences are now all too clear for everyone to see …. huge delays and backlogs at the border.
Fifth, we now have the complete denial from the Brexiteers and the right-wing media that any of this has arisen from Brexit.
The facts …. The UK voted for third country status, otherwise fondly known as “taking back control”, and therefore entry into the EU inevitably requires more stringent passport and security checks at the border to establish if the person has exceeded the 90 days in 180 days rule, if the person has enough money to support their stay in the EU and if the person has a ticket for their return journey to the UK.
Simple.
Wholly predictable and wholly expected.
But as usual, the Brexiteers and the right-wing media blame “the foreigners”.
No wonder we are in such a mess!
Our country deserves so much better than this.
Slava Ukraini! …. Glory to Ukraine!
