The Guardian view on this false autumn: an uncanny beauty
A so-called “false autumn” this year may cause problems for wildlife in the coming months.
Trees have been shedding their leaves about 2 months early because of the very hot weather and the usual wild foods for birds and mammals may already be depleted as a result.
Berries and nuts have been appearing much earlier than usual at the end of June and early July with many reported to be smaller and less juicy than normal. This might mean animals are unable to build up their reserves of body fat before the onset of winter.
Nature's timing is everything for our wildlife. The climate emergency is bringing with it seasonal weather patterns which our wildlife is just not adapted to. Our long, hot summer and the “false autumn” may have a knock-on impact for many species right into the real autumn months and beyond.
