The funeral

So, at last, the ridiculously long mourning period for “the whole country” (not!) is over, Monday has come and gone and the queen's funeral has finally taken place.

We have had totally excessive 24-hour coverage day after day in most of the media. The death of the queen and the proclamation of a new king does not warrant or deserve the most appalling fawning, sycophancy, obsequiousness and cloying veneration.

I have sent a complaint to the BBC as have huge numbers of other people .... SS15 wildlife watching: I have had enough of this …. I am going to complain

Doubtless the media excelled itself again on the day of the funeral with hour after hour of live coverage and then a repeat of the coverage when it was all over.

Just the day before the funeral, someone in all seriousness claimed that it would be the most significant event in world history.

WTF!

Obviously that person hadn’t heard of the end of 2 world wars, the fall of the Berlin Wall and the collapse of totalitarian communism, Nelson Mandela’s release from Robben Island and the democritisation of South Africa, the moon landings and so much more. Yet again, perspective totally disappears during this royal circus!

We were also told that “the whole country” would be watching the funeral.

Absolute nonsense!

The die-hard monarchists will of course have watched it. Many others undoubtedly dipped in and out of the coverage given that it was a historic event. Many others will not have watched it due to being either totally ambivalent, too busy getting on with their own lives or refusing to watch it in principle.

I refused to watch the queen's funeral, as I do all royal events, and I was out and about all day during my long weekend trip to Norfolk. This included commemorating the anniversary of my mother's death even though I was forced to make alternative arrangements due to the queen's funeral. I suppose at least I should be grateful that Monday was not the date of the funeral which would have been cancelled as so many others were across the country.

Despite the fact that it was claimed that “the whole country” was watching the queen's funeral, the day was quite evidently just like a normal bank holiday Monday given the amount of traffic on the roads and the large numbers of people out walking or engaging in other activities. I spoke to several people during the day and it was abundantly clear that many of them had had enough and wanted to be anywhere but in front of their TVs being force fed yet more fawning, sycophancy, obsequiousness and cloying veneration.

It gets even worse. Various people claimed, without any evidence whatsoever, that up to 5 billion people watched the funeral around the world.

Absolute nonsense!

The world’s population is around 7.9 billion. Vast numbers do not have access to TV or the Internet even if they were remotely interested in what was happening in one small, isolated nation.
