Not my king!

I have sympathy and condolences on the death of the queen. Of course I do. It is obviously a sad time for one family.

But ….

I refuse to accept that the whole country” is mourning despite what the mainstream media continually claim in their totally excessive and sycophantic coverage.

The new king is not my king and I am not his subject!

I entirely reject the notion of a person being elevated to rule over me simply because of an accident of birth.

Many people pretend and claim that we live in a democracy, despite the fact that those who are in charge right now in the UK are there despite the express will of the people in elections.

One is in Downing Street thanks to an archaic and undemocratic electoral system and the other is in Buckingham Palace thanks to the divine right of kings.

In the space of a few days, we have a Prime Minister that 99.83% of the population never voted for …. see here.

In the space of a few days, we have a king and prince that 100% of the population never voted for. There is no vote in Parliament by elected MPs to confirm the king. There is no parliamentary debate. Westminster MPs “swear allegiance” to the new monarch as do members of the Scottish Parliament, the Welsh Assembly and the Northern Ireland Assembly. A new head of state takes office without even a thumbs up as confirmation.

The UK is many things but a true democracy is not one of them.

The UK now has both an unelected Prime Minister and a newly unelected head of state but let's carrying on lecturing Russia, China and all the other totalitarian states around the world about democracy.

I have been a Republican since I began to learn about the British Constitution at school. I have believe that a true democracy has an elected head of state rather than a hereditary monarchy for very good logical reasons …. see here.

Hopefully the death of the queen and a new king will at least reignite a debate over whether the royal family deserves a global role in the 21st century in the 14 Commonwealth countries where the British monarch remains the head of state.

A legacy of empire and slavery that was entwined with British royalty for centuries has raised tough questions about the place of a foreign king and republican movements from the Pacific to North America to the Caribbean should seize the moment.

Recent developments, notably Barbados becoming a republic in 2021 and removing the queen as its head of state, have led to a crescendo that could now reach a climax.

Just like the fall of communism, let’s hope for a domino effect which finally results in the demise of the monarchy in the UK and the establishment of a true democracy with an elected head of state.

The great appear great because we are on our knees!” .... James Larkin

Let’s get off our knees and abolish the monarchy.

For those claiming that what is currently occurring is historic, just wait until we elect our head of state.

That really will be history in the making.
