A Russian ballerina from the world-renowned MariinskyTheatre dressed in full costume and performed scenes from the ballet Swan Lake by Tchaikovsky .... not on stage though but on the frozen Gulf of Finland.
This is Ilmira
Bagrautinova's way of objecting to the construction of a port in
Batareinaya Bay, a popular beach about 100 km west of Saint Petersburg, the second largest city in Russia.
Ilmira Bagrautinova danced in -15°C and
posted her videos online.
The
performance wasn’t just a moment of beautiful ballet but an eco-activism statement to protect the species that
nest in this location, an area now jeopardised by the potential
construction of a new port.
Batareinaya
Bay, Ilmira Bagrautinova says on social media, is a “unique,
natural and historical place where swans nest in spring, families with children
rest in summer, hundreds of fishermen go out on ice in winter and the forest
has trails for quad bikes and skiers.”
She adds .... “Nature
in harmony with people …. All of this is at risk of extinction.”
There are dozens of protected areas in the Gulf of Finland which extends between Finland to the north, Estonia to the south and Saint Petersburg to the east.
