Has anyone else noticed all the Government Ministers who seem to think it is normal behaviour to have Union Jack flags of varying sizes in their lounges, kitchens or offices at home? I am sure that some of them even have a flag in their toilets!
These are plastic phoney patriots of the worst type!
You don't need a flagpole in your home to demonstrate your patriotism.
Do you know what is patriotic?
Loving your country enough to care for and support the disadvantaged, properly funding the delivery of its essential public services, building and uniting its communities, repairing and restoring its natural environment, planning for a green and sustainable future and building international alliances. Oh, and behaving honestly and telling the truth.
Do you know what is not patriotic?
Flying a flag.
There is not particularly anything wrong with liking or flying a flag. The problem is the people who wave it the most are usually expressing narrow-minded nationalism rather than patriotism and they spend most of their time destroying the country they claim to love.
A flag does not replace the need for an ethical, honest and competent Government.
But maybe this sudden post-Brexit fetish of flag waving is just Ministers wanting to express their anti-EU credentials now that Brexit has apparently been "done"?
Or maybe they are just doing what their media advisor suggests is good PR. Is being told to be patriotic actually patriotic?
This current obsession with putting Union Jack flags everywhere just highlights the fragility and insecurity of the Government as we emerge into the post-Brexit world of the sunlit uplands of our glorious future (not).
Anyway, just a minor point but I thought flags were meant to be flown outside on special days only?
The instantly dislikeable Robert Jenrick, the Secretary of State for Housing, Communities and Local Government, has just had his "small flag" pointed out to him.
Hilarious 😀😀😀
Charlie deserves a TV journalism award for piss-taking and Naga almost deserves an award for self-restraint 😀
Charlie Stayt - "Robert Jenrick, your flag is just a little bit small." 😊#BBCBreakfast pic.twitter.com/QfnyG8RqC1
