Around seven in 10 councils are now making efforts to encourage
wildflowers on road verges according to a Freedom of Information request by
the PA news agency.
Wildlife charity Plantlife says it has seen a significant change since 2013 when it started campaigning on giving wildflowers the chance to set seed by mowing less and later. This provides valuable habitat for insects and other wildlife such as birds and bats that feed on them. For more information on the campaign see here.
Basildon Council has joined the initiative in planting on some of its roundabouts and in some of its parks and open spaces including Gloucester Park, one of my local patch sites …. see here and here.
