Evening visit to St. Nicholas Church and surrounding areas – 4th April 2021

Date: 4th April 2021

Time: from 7:30 p.m.

Weather: dry, sunny, dark, 15°C

This evening’s visit was another where there was a beautiful sunset to the west.

It was also another visit where I failed to see any Badgers and they remain an elusive species still waiting to be added to my site list for the year.

As on my last evening visit, I did hear the bark of a Red Fox behind me whilst sitting and watching the Badger sett and I also caught sight of 2 Red Foxes in my torchlight in the area of grassland between St. Nicholas Church and St. Nicholas Lane.

The most notable bird record was a Chiffchaff which called several times from somewhere west of the church car park followed by a double “chiff-chaff”.

There were several other birds singing before it went dark including RobinBlackbirdSong Thrush and Wren. There seemed to be several Robins singing around the site but the last species to cease singing was a single Song Thrush close to where I sat which sang continuously for around 10 minutes.

Species recorded during this visit were as follows (heard only records in italics):

Red Fox

Chiffchaff
Robin
Blackbird
Wren
Song Thrush
Blue Tit
Long-tailed Tit
Magpie
Carrion Crow
Woodpigeon

Site totals to date (2021 totals in brackets):

Birds = 51  (35)
Mammals = 6  (4)
Butterflies = 21  (2)
Dragonflies and damselflies = 7  (0)
Reptiles = 1  (0)
Amphibians = 0  (0)
