"Freddie" the Thames seal put down by vets after dog attack

This is absolutely appalling but in some respects not at all surprising ....

Metro News - Chris Packham says dog owner is to blame for Freddie the seal's death

I grew up with dogs around our family.

I love dogs.

The problem is that there are far too many dogs in this country, especially when compared with other European countries. The British are obsessed with them and many more were acquired during the last year of lockdown. Large numbers of them have now ended up in dog shelters because owners have become bored with them or because the RSPCA have seized them due to the poor care or cruelty inflicted on them.

A dog is for life .... not just for Christmas .... or a lockdown.

Of course, the majority of dog owners are responsible and caring and their dogs are well trained and well behaved.

However, there are also untrained, unleashed, out of control dogs, which usually have owners to match, who think it is hilarious when their dogs chase, disturb and even attack wildlife, including on designated nature reserves.

Then there are those dogs that bound up to you (sometimes aggressively) and jump up with muddy paws with their owners smiling and saying “don't worry, he is only being friendly”.

Don’t even get me started on those owners who think it is acceptable to hang up plastic bags of dog poo on hedges or trees for other people to clear up!

Some of these people think they are “animal lovers” but all they love is their pets and they don't give a damn about the environment or its wildlife.

If the owner of the dog who caused the tragic death of this seal could be banned for life from keeping dogs and made to pay a huge fine which is then passed on to a seal rescue charity, it would be a job well done and hopefully a deterrent to other irresponsible dog owners.
