Visit to Noak Bridge Nature Reserve – 16th June 2020

Date: 16th June 2020

Time: from 8:00 a.m.

Weather: dry, sunny, light wind, 15°C to 20°C

I had an excellent visit this morning.

I had my first sighting of Common Lizard since 7th May 2020 although in a different location from where I have seen them before. I saw and successfully photographed a single individual along the boardwalk between the “T” junction and Meadow Pond.

Butterflies were very well represented on this visit and I saw 8 species: Comma (3), Red Admiral (1), Holly Blue (2), Large Skipper (4), Meadow Brown (10+), Speckled Wood (2), Large White (2) and Small White (1).

I also saw 4 species of dragonfly and damselfly: Common Darter (2), Black-tailed Skimmer (4), Blue-tailed Damselfly (2) and Common Blue Damselfly (c.10). Common Darter and Black-tailed Skimmer were new records for my site list taking it to 8 species.

With regard to birds, I heard at least one House Martin plus I heard 3 singing male Blackcaps and saw 2 singing male Chiffchaffs and heard 2 others. I saw a Great Spotted Woodpecker and heard another.

I saw 3 Grey Squirrels on this visit, the first between the entrance to the reserve near the A127 and the steps down to the main track, the second close to the bottom of the steps and the third near the junction of the main track and the track down from the Eastfield Road entrance.

Finally, I bumped in to Ray Batty, the Chairman of Noak Bridge Nature Reserve Society, and his lovely dog. We had an interesting discussion regarding the reserve and its history and wildlife. It was nice to meet you Ray.
