First wild European Bison born in UK for millennia

In July, I posted about this remarkable event .... SS15 wildlife watching: Wild European Bison return to the UK for first time in thousands of years

The “Wilder Blean” project, a collaboration between the Kent Wildlife Trust and the Wildwood Trust in Blean Woods near Canterbury has had an early surprise: a baby European Bison, the first wild European Bison to be born in the UK for thousands of years.

In July 2022, three European Bison were released as part of the “Wilder Blean” project but, unknown to the rangers, one of them was pregnant. European Bison conceal their pregnancies to prevent predators targeting pregnant animals or their offspring. The female calf was discovered after a couple of days when rangers did not see the mother who had found a secluded location to give birth.
