“Just as this Island Belongs to the Gulls”

When I attended the Gathering at Wild Ken Hill on 17th September 2022 (see here), David Gray, the musician, singer-songwriter and campaigner and supporter and patron of Curlew Action, was there at one of the events.

During the discussion, he mentioned a beautiful poem that had inspired one of his songs, “Gulls”.

Songfacts - “Gulls” by David Gray

Just as this Island Belongs to the Gulls by Herman de Coninck .

Just as this island belongs to the gulls,
and the gulls to their cry
and their cry to the wind
and the wind to no one,

So is this island the gulls,
and the gulls are their cry
and their cry is the wind
and the wind no one’s.
