Following this in July 2022 …. SS15 wildlife watching: New legal protections edge England closer towards wild Beaver return ….
The day has finally arrived at last!
Today, European Beavers will officially be classed as a native European Protected species under the Conservation of Habitats and Species Regulations 2017 making it illegal to capture, kill, injure or disturb them.
This is a major win for nature’s amazing eco-system engineers brought about campaigning from numerous organisations and individuals over a lengthy period of time.
European Beavers and their habitat are now subject to new protections and the Government has set out important advice for landowners to help them welcome European Beavers back while sensibly managing any localised impacts that might arise.
However, we still need to hear about the next steps.
The plans set out how European Beavers can be managed where they are present but are yet to include a framework for future releases in to the wild. A commitment to Beaver Management Groups to support landowners and communities as European Beavers return is also still missing but hopefully the Government will be setting out more detail very soon.
Sadly, the recent attacks on nature by the
Government including the potential scrapping of environmental protections added
to the continued lack of clarity around rewards for those landowners who make
space on their land for nature (like European Beavers and wetlands),
mean that the longer term future for European Beavers still remains uncertain.
The Wildlife Trusts - Historic day for Beavers in England
Today’s a big day – beavers are officially recognised as a native and protected species in England! Beavers are brilliant natural engineers and amazing at restoring wetlands – it is vital they are protected! https://t.co/ajd6qnevSS (1/5) pic.twitter.com/hK1pnWUvSK

However, we’re VERY worried that last week’s UK Government announcements mean that beavers’ new legal status could now be reviewed – alongside all the other vital laws which protect nature. https://t.co/c98hMEw9Xb (2/5)

The new Brexit Freedoms Bill could sweep away environmental regulations that protect wildlife and wild places. Beavers and other wildlife are protected by the Habitat Regulations, which originated in EU law – all of which are going to be reviewed by the end of 2023 ☹ (3/5)

We have led the work to bring back beavers for decades. @ScotWildlife brought the first wild beavers back to the UK. Later, @DevonWildlife worked with communities along the river to demonstrate how people and beavers can thrive together (4/5)

Many Wildlife Trusts have released beavers in enclosures in recent years, building knowledge and expertise to support their recolonisation across Great Britain 💚https://t.co/IxmgCJvIzV (5/5) pic.twitter.com/r3NwyQiaJA
