COVID or Corvid?

In order to avoid any confusion at the current time, I present a simple guide to COVID and corvids ðŸ˜€

COVID-19 is an infectious disease caused by severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2).

The disease was first identified in December 2019 in Wuhan, the capital of China's Hubei province, and has since spread globally resulting in the ongoing 2020 pandemic.

It is not nice and it is causing a great deal of chaos, anxiety and immense personal grief. It can not be described as intelligent but, like any virus, it is a sub-microscopic infectious agent that cleverly replicates only inside the cells of a living organism.

Corvidae is a cosmopolitan family of passerine birds. In common English, they are known as the crow family or, more technically, as corvids. Corvids display remarkable intelligence for animals of their size and are among the most intelligent birds thus far studied. Their total brain-to-body mass ratio is equal to that of non-human great apes and cetaceans and only slightly lower than that of humans. Unlike COVID-19, corvids are also nice!

Over 120 species have been described worldwide. The majority of the species are found in tropical south and central America and in south Asia, with fewer than 10 species each in Africa and Australasia.

In the UK, there are 8 species of crow: Chough, Raven, Hooded Crow, Carrion Crow, Rook, Jackdaw, Magpie and Jay.

In Europe, there are a further 3 species, all of which I have seen: Iberian Magpie, Alpine Chough and Nutcracker.

Here are some photos of all 8 UK species of crow plus Iberian Magpie:
