The store was due to open at 8:00 a.m. and I arrived at 7:45 a.m. After queuing outside, I eventually got in to the store an hour later. At least it was another beautiful warm and sunny spring morning.
The queue was orderly, good humoured and compliant with Asda’s instructions.
George Orwell referred to “the gentle-mannered, undemonstrative, law-abiding English” and “the orderly behaviour of English crowds, the lack of pushing and quarrelling, the willingness to form queues”.
It does seem like the UK mythology or stereotype around patient queuing is actually true and not borne out by an academic study British queuing and "the rule of six".
The vast majority of people do appear to be willingly complying with the advice and mandatory instructions repeatedly given by the UK Government. There are of course the small number of muppets that just don’t get it! Either you weren't around when brains were handed out or you believe in your own superior exceptionalism. You are only exceptional in your naivety, complacency and blatant selfishness.
Everyone, that is everyone, needs
to protect themselves, their families and their neighbours, not to mention the
wonderful NHS workers who are putting their own lives on the line to save
others, the care workers looking after vulnerable people and the underpaid and, until now, undervalued key workers who are keeping the country going.
On my walk over to Asda, I saw a Grey Squirrel and on the walk back I
heard a singing male Blackcap.
My “queuing to get in to Asda” list remains firmly stuck on 5 (Pied Wagtail,
Mallard, Carrion Crow, Herring Gull and Lesser Black-backed Gull) with no
additions today.
