Today is International Nurses Day

International Nurses Day is observed around the world on 12th May of each year, the anniversary of the birth of Florence Nightingale. It marks the contributions that nurses make to societies around the world.

On International Nurses Day this year, which coincides with the 200th anniversary of the birth of Florence Nightingale, the world needs to focus on the unique role of nurses and give sincere thanks for their bravery and selfless contribution and commitment in the struggle to tackle COVID-19. In particular, we must never forget the nurses who have made the ultimate sacrifice and given their lives in caring for others.

In addition, we must demand from politicians and policymakers the proper recognition for the service of these wonderful people and call for a substantial increase in investment in our health services. We must never be as globally under-prepared and under-resourced for a pandemic again.

This year’s theme for International Nurses Day designated by the International Council of Nurses, Nurses: A Voice to Lead – Nursing the World to Health, could not be more appropriate.

In the UK, a service is traditionally held in Westminster Abbey in London. During the service, a symbolic lamp is taken from the Nurses' Chapel in the Abbey and handed from one nurse to another and then to the Dean who places it on the High Altar. This signifies the passing of knowledge from one nurse to another.

This year, nursing leaders are asking the public to shine a light from their window on Tuesday night to show appreciation for the profession in the fight against COVID-19.

Ruth May, Chief Nursing Officer for England, has joined other nursing leaders in urging the nation to take part: “I know how much the public’s support has buoyed my colleagues during this testing time. It would mean a great deal if people once again showed their gratitude by shining a light for nurses this Tuesday”. The tribute is planned for 8.30 p.m.

In London, an image of Florence Nightingale will be projected on to her place of work, St Thomas’s Hospital, from the Houses of Parliament throughout the night.
